There are many different methods when it comes to potty training. However, the most effective method for me is crate training. You will also find this is the easiest way to potty train your puppy.
All you actually need for crate training is a crate large enough for your puppy. You should, at all time, keep your dog in the crate overnight and during your absence (e.g. when you go to work).
Before you put your pup into the crate, take him outside and let him do his business. Do this again after you take him out of the crate. Whenever your pup is out of the crate, you should keep an eye on him. It's ideal to put him in a confined place, where you can supervise him. Every few hours, especially after meal, you should take your puppy out to the potty zone. It's a good idea to give him command like "go pee" when he's at the potty zone, and praise him lavishly when he does good.
That way, your puppy will learn to go to the potty zone whenever he needs to do his business. One last thing is that you shouldn't leave any food/water inside the crate to avoid accident. It happened to me :)
